What is a Registered Dietitian?
There is a lot of nutrition advice out there. It can be difficult to know where to turn for the most up-to-date, science-based information about food and nutrition.
Registered Dietitians (RD) are food and nutrition experts who have completed a minimum of a four year degree in Nutrition or Dietetics at an accredited University approved by the American Dietetic Association, completed at least 900 hours of supervised practice in dietetics, passed an extensive national exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and maintain registration through fulfilling continuing education requirements. Many registered dietitians also complete advanced degrees and specialty certifications.
The term Nutritionist is not regulated in the United States. Tip: When seeking advice about your diet, nutrition or food be sure to see a registered dietitian unless a nutritionist is able to backup their education and credentials.
Studies suggest that individuals attempting to lose weight and manage chronic illness achieve better outcomes when seen by a RD.
